Introducing the 7th Grade Sketchbook Project!

Winter Term started off with each 7th grader receiving their very own special sketchbook to transform into a beautiful, unique visual journal of their perceptions of the world !  Students are expected to carry their sketchbooks with them when they are able, use them as much as possible to draw, sketch, brainstorm, doodle, and experiment, and to bring them to art class on Mondays and Wednesdays.  See the handout below for the minimum requirements, ways to make the most out of the sketchbook experience by going above and beyond, and a two page list of drawing ideas and prompts.

Assemblage Sculptures

Continuing with the theme of “inside world / outside world,” 7th grade artists have been creating assemblage sculptures using found objects and mixed media.  Working with materials in our studio as well as items they find in their lives beyond the art studio, students are considering shape, line, color, texture, composition, and material usage as they represent their inside and outside worlds.  Before beginning the project, we examined work by prolific assemblage artists, including Joseph Cornell, Rosalie Gascoigne, Janice Lowry, Louise Nevelson, Betye Saar, and George Herms. Learning goals of the project:

  1. Understand and use symbolism to express your inside and outside worlds (who you are on the inside vs. how you are perceived by others or affected by outside forces).
  2. Understand and intentionally use texture to enhance and support your concept behind the work.
  3. Understand and carefully consider the form of your box as a sculptural piece of art.
  4. Incorporate mixed media and found objects to create an expressive piece of art that holds significant meaning to you personally.
  5. Understand how to problem solve and work through mistakes in order to improve your artwork (growth mindset).
  6. Use tools and materials (cardboard, exacto blades, glue guns, paint, and found objects) properly and effectively to create your intended visual effects.

“Inside / Outside” Encaustic Paintings

7th grade artists have been working hard, using beeswax, collage, graphite transfer paper, oil pastels, and oil paint to create mixed-media encaustic paintings that represent their inside and outside worlds.  Their “inside worlds” include qualities  that represent who they really are on the inside: hopes, fears, memories, feelings, identities, ideas, and other truths.  Their “outside worlds” include others’ perceptions, influences from friends, family, school, and media, likes and dislikes, stereotypes, and assumptions that affect them.  Artists intentionally chose colors, materials, and collage elements that symbolized specific concepts meaningful to them personally, and had fun practicing and experimenting with this new medium!

Mixed-Media Encaustic Painting : Inside / Outside

7th grade artists have begun experimenting and practicing working with beewax, collage, graphite transfer paper, and oils to create layered artwork.  Next, they will use these skills to create a mixed-media painting that explores their inside and outside worlds.  Each artist can be collecting collage items from her own life to include in her painting.  Things like old letters, doodles, ticket stubs, envelopes, photos (printed on plain, non-glossy paper), maps, newspapers, and anything else on non-glossy paper can be incorporated into these paintings.
