Today, the 8th Grade visited numerous art galleries in and around the TK Artists Lofts near Pioneer Square. The goal of our field trip was to find ideas and inspiration for students’ independent projects, and students created sketches and collected information about works of art they enjoyed. We surprisingly battled cold weather and even snow, but the entire class stayed positive and came away with some positive experiences that will hopefully continue to shape their artistic vision for the year. Here are some pictures from the day:

The 8th Graders are beginning to build momentum with their final projects, solidifying ideas, overcoming initial obstacles, and discovering new possibilities. Here are some pictures of their works in progress as well as a video interview. Enjoy!
The primary goal of Art in Term 2 is for students to define art for themselves, creating personal connections to art through the development of unique, independent projects. Their process involves brainstorming and research as they strive to develop multiple works around a common theme or concept. They seek inspiration from other artists and strive to sustain their creative ideas long enough to acquire new skills, overcome obstacles, and make discoveries. This term culminates with an art exhibition, where their work is paired with a written artist statement describing their experience and artistic goals.
So far this term, students have set a direction for their work by beginning a project description that will evolve into a polished artist statement. They have also been making sketches and researching other artists for inspiration. Some have begun the first steps of laying out their ideas to begin their projects, ranging from video art, photography, realistic and abstract painting, computer illustration, and mixed media. Enjoy these pictures from the studio!
8th Graders are currently working on two projects designed to build skills around brainstorming and developing personal ideas as they strive to create original works in preparation for Term 2, where they will be creating a series of thematically interconnected works for a culminating art exhibit. For their first project, students worked on a customized project connected to skills they wanted to learn and personal interests. Students worked with a variety of materials and built skills ranging from realistic drawing to mixed-media and photoshop. For their second project, Point of Departure, students created their own works based on individual experiences and a specific artistic reference. Projects range from Van Gogh inspired trees, paintings of the night sky, Banksy like stencils, and mixed media works inspired by the series, Stranger Things. The goal is for each student to make work that is unique and personally relevant while allowing them to build specific art skills.
